孙丽英数年前与丈夫离婚了，独自抚养着天生失聪的儿子郑大，她耐心的教会儿子说话，教儿子识字，母子俩生活艰难，但她却没有埋怨丈夫移情别恋，埋怨上天对她的不公。 孙丽英认为自己的儿子跟正常人没什么两样，可是儿子入学考试失败还是让她感到失落。郑大被其他孩子欺负的时候把助听器摔烂了，孙丽英想让前夫帮忙，却不得要领。 生活还是要继续的，为了给儿子再买一个助听器，孙丽英除了派报纸，还兼职了几份钟点工。好朋友大贺与方老师都给她们俩母子提供了很大的帮助，孙丽英也对方老师产生了好感。 经方老师的帮忙，郑大上学的事也有了希望。可是孙丽英却被雇佣她做钟点工的贾老板差点强奸了。她拿着本该属于自己的钱给郑大买了一个助听器，可郑大还是受到了歧视，孙丽英追逐着走在大街上的孩子。儿子问为何自己要戴助听器，孙丽英终于面对了现实，告诉儿子因为他是个聋子……。The subtitle of Jean-Marie Straub and Danièle Huillet’s first feature, from 1965, “Only Violence Helps Where Violence Reigns,” suggests the fierce political program evoked by their rigorous aesthetic. The pretext of the film, set in Cologne, is Heinrich Böll’s novel “Billiards at Half Past Nine,” which they strip down to a handful of stark events and film with a confrontational angularity akin to Bartók’s music that adorns the soundtrack. The subtlest of cues accompany the story’s complex flashbacks. The middle-aged Robert Fähmel tells a young hotel bellhop of persecutions under the Third Reich| his elderly father, Heinrich, an architect famed for a local abbey, recalls the militarism of the First World War, when his wife, Johanna, incurred trouble for insulting the Kaiser. A third-generation Fähmel is considering architecture, just as the exiled brother of Robert’s late wife, returns, only to be met by their former torturer, now a West German official taking part in a celebratory parade of war veterans. Straub and Huillet make the layers of history live in the present tense, which they judge severely.
